Cat Coat Care

Cat Coat Care

A well-groomed coat is one of the clearest signs of a healthy, happy cat. Regular coat care not only keeps your cat looking their best – it also helps you spot skin issues early, reduces shedding and hairballs, and strengthens the bond between you and your cat.

Shorthaired Cats

Shorthaired cats are generally low-maintenance when it comes to grooming, but they still benefit from regular brushing. A weekly brush removes loose hair, distributes natural oils and keeps the coat shiny. During shedding season, more frequent brushing helps reduce hairballs and keeps your home cleaner.

Longhaired Cats

Longhaired breeds such as Maine Coon, Norwegian Forest Cat, Persian and Ragdoll require more frequent grooming – ideally daily or every other day. Regular brushing and combing prevents mats and tangles, which can become painful if left untreated. Pay extra attention to areas prone to matting: behind the ears, under the armpits, around the collar and on the belly.

If mats do form, never cut them out with scissors – this risks injuring the skin. Small mats can sometimes be worked out gently with a detangling spray and a wide-toothed comb. For larger or deeper mats, professional grooming is recommended.

Hairless Cats

Hairless breeds such as the Sphynx produce more skin oils than coated cats, which can make them feel sticky and attract dirt. Regular bathing – ideally weekly – is essential to keep the skin clean and prevent irritation. Use a gentle, cat-specific shampoo and make sure to dry them thoroughly afterwards, as they lose body heat quickly.

Bathing

Most cats do not need frequent baths, but regular bathing is beneficial for show cats, cats with skin conditions, heavily soiled coats or breeds prone to oily skin. Introduce bathing gradually from a young age for the best results. Always use a shampoo formulated specifically for cats – human shampoos and dog shampoos are not suitable.

Mat Prevention

The best way to prevent mats is regular brushing combined with occasional bathing. Bathing helps remove dirt, loose hair and undercoat, which are the main causes of matting. A clean, well-brushed coat is far less likely to tangle.

Nail Clipping

Regular nail clipping is an important part of coat and paw care. Overgrown nails can curl into the paw pads and cause pain or infection. Most cats benefit from nail clipping every 3–4 weeks. If you are unsure how to clip your cat’s nails safely, our grooming services can help.

Professional Grooming

Even with regular home grooming, many cats benefit from occasional professional grooming – especially longhaired breeds, show cats or cats that are difficult to groom at home.
